Are You Feeding The Roaches?

You might be surprised to learn just how plentiful and available food is for cockroaches, especially in kitchens! Roaches will eat anything we or our pets eat. Here is a checklist of common places where roaches find food in kitchens. Use it and don’t feed the roaches.

1. Bread crumbs inside a toaster
2. Grease behind the stove or inside the          burners.
3. Spilled food (even tiny spills provide nourishment)
4. Pet food left out overnight
5. Packages not properly sealed
6. Uncovered candy dishes, cake plates, etc.
7. Dirty dishes left overnight.
8. Kitchen trash (either throw it out each evening or buy a trash container for inside that
has a tight fitting lid.

WATER is also vital for cock- roaches, and they get it from common sources such as these:
1. A dripping faucet or wet sponge.                 2. Condensation on pipes or window sills.
3. Water in the drip pan under a refrigerator .
4. "Empty" soda or beer cans you are.    recycling-most still have a few drops of liquid in the bottom.
5. Catch basins under houseplants..
6.  Pet water dishes left out overnight.

Good sanitation means eliminating or greatly reducing sources of food and moisture, as well as insect hiding places. This won't get rid of roaches, but combined with our regular treatments, it's an essential part of a control and prevention program.

Pests Even In Clean Homes!

We've heard some people say that pests don’t bother a clean home. Oh that this would be true! Unfortunately, ALL HOMES GET PESTS! Cleanliness doesn't mean pest-free, because pests can find food even in what appears to be a clean home. Insects like cockroaches and mice find plenty of food and water where we don't expect, even in the cleanest of homes and apartments. That's not to say that cleanliness isn't a good thing. It's a GREAT thing!! Many pests become much more numerous, or are more likely to set up permanent residence, where they have easy access to food and water. Ants, cockroaches, and mice are just a few of the pests whose populations soar where food and water are plentiful for them. A problem common to ALL homes-clean or dirty-are the many pests that invade, not looking for food, but simply a climate inside that is more to their liking. Boxelder bugs, elm leaf beetles, clover mites, rats, etc., find their way indoors, looking for a warmer, drier place. It is also very easy to unknowingly bring pests right through the front door with you, hidden in groceries and other items  you carry indoors.

It is unfortunate that even clean homes are not immune to having pest problems. But the great news is that our professional services give you the benefits of a pest-free home, regardless of whether or not you always keep your home  “spic and span".

Pest Prevention Tip of the Month

Remove bird nests from eaves and branches touching your home immediately after the young birds stop using the nests. Various blood-sucking and scavenging bugs live in these nests, and leave them when the birds leave. They may then crawl into your home.

HORNET SALIVA IN NEW SPORT DRINK

Can drinking the saliva of hornets increase your endurance? In Japan, many people believe that’s what helped propel Olympic marathoner Naoko Takahashi to her gold medal at the Sydney Games last September.

Takahashi is Japan's first female athlete ever to win a gold medal in track and field. The drink she chugged both before and during the race is called Vaam. (A similar drink is now being marketed as Vespa in the United States.) It consists of amino acids found in the saliva of baby hornets, and apparently helps burn fat and reduce muscle fatigue during exercise.

Hornets have incredible strength. Adults fly up to 70 miles a day, looking for other insects to feed on, then easily fly their prey-often weighing half the weight of the hornets themselves-back to their nest. They feed these insects to their young larvae, and then in a new twist on nursing, swallow the babies' saliva in exchange. It's this saliva that gives the adult hornets their strength and endurance. The drink has already become a $50 million a year business in Japan.

WILDLIFE POSSIBLE EBOLA CARRIERS?

Another outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus, this time in Uganda, is claiming more lives. By the end of the year the death toll from this latest outbreak had risen to over 160 people, out of 400 infected, and was continuing to climb. The virus causes massive internal bleeding  in its victims and is highly contagious. It is still a complete mystery as to where the virus exists when it is not infecting humans, and how the first people in an outbreak contract the virus. Scientists believe that the reservoirs of the virus must be in wildlife, but so far they have come up empty-handed. Recently it was announced that researchers will start large-scale testing of rats, bats, birds and other wildlife in the areas where the latest outbreak is occurring, in another attempt to hopefully solve the mystery.

GIANT YELLOW JACKETS NEST FOUND

A giant yellow jacket nest was recently discovered, and according to some reports, it was about the size of a Volkswagen! The nest, at the base of a cypress tree in a Miami, Florida, park was estimated to weigh 200 pounds and be eight years old. The park was immediately evacuated and closed when the huge hive was discovered. A local pest management professional took three visits to control the monster.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED!

Q. How do ants find their way so quickly to food?

A. Ant colonies are constantly sending out "scouts" that wander about, looking for new food sources. When a scout has found food, it returns to the colony, marking the trail it used with an odor from special glands in either its abdomen or leg, depending on the kind of ant. Other ants follow this scent trail to the newly discovered food, and reinforce the trail with their own scent as they go, making it even easier for more ants to follow. The trail scent can last for a few hours, or up to several days with some carpenter ant species. Ants rely heavily on these scent trails, but recent research shows that some kinds of ants supplement odor with visual cues. They may navigate by the orientation of the sun, or when they are in the shade, take "mental snapshots" of landmarks along the trail path. By comparing these views with previous pictures in their tiny brains, the ants are able to find their way about, and even refine a scent trail to make the trip easier.

Answers to pest trivia!

  1. Cockroaches are most active from 10 pm to 2 am.
  2. A home was estimated to have 1,200 rats roaming about. The owners had treated them like pets and fed them. But because of the smell and potential health hazards, the city had the home fumigated and then demolished.
  3. No. This mixture works fine on removing dirt, but it does not kill bacteria or viruses.
  4. Plenty. One study showed that children who washed their hands four or more times during the school day had 24% fewer sick days due to colds and flu and 50% fewer days lost due to stomach illnesses

TERMITES? GAIN THE UPPER HAND!

Because termites work silently and for the most part inconspicuously, most people don’t realize how much damage they do to our homes and other buildings.  In a typical year, termite damage cost much more than all the earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes combined!  Obviously, taking the following four basic steps to help prevent this damage can save you a lot of money and heartache.

Eliminate excess moisture.  Repair leaking pipes and roofs, slope soil away from your home, and trim shrubbery-blocking vents. Repair gutters and downspouts, and direct the downspout water and any other water away from your home. Make sure sprinklers aren’t set to aim water against the house, and if there are moisture loving plants near the foundation, move them further out so that you don’t need to water heavily near the foundation.

Eliminate termite food. Remove old form boards, wood debris, and tree stumps. Store firewood and lumber off the ground, and make sure it isn’t touching a building.

Remove direct soil-to-wood contacts, such as wooden post or wood siding that touches the soil. Check fence posts, too.

Have regular professional termite inspections. This is the most important step. Even if you do all the above, termites can still find their way to wood in your home. Our inspection will also locate decaying wood and other wood pest problems. If you have not had an inspection recently, call our office to arrange for one.

WEST NILE VIRUS IS BACK

The mosquito-borne West Nile Virus that last year killed seven people in New York, survived the winter and again is a concern. The virus was found early in the year in hibernating mosquitoes, and later in dead cows.

Crows are particularly susceptible (10,000 died last year from the virus), and or an important early warning sign. That means that the virus will likely cause problems a again later this summer, and could easily spread. It’s important in these areas that people drain-standing water were mosquitoes breed, and take steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

PROTECT PETS FROM POISONS

Follow these steps to help prevent poisoning of your own, and your neighbors, pets.

·        Buy “safe” antifreeze that says it’s non-toxic for pets and wildlife, or clean up any spills immediately. Just one lick of regular antifreeze can kill a pet.

·        Never feed your pets foods or medicines that can be harmful to them, like chocolate , onions, or aspirin.

·        Keep all medicines, cleaners, insecticides, etc., in a closed cabinet where curious pets can’t get to them and tip them over.

·        Use our professional pest management services to control pests rather than do-it –yourself control, so you don’t need to store insecticides in your home and garage. Also, studies show homeowners are much more likely to use an incorrect product, use one with higher toxicity than is needed, apply more than they need to, or improperly dispose of excess.

·        Keep pets out of sprayed areas until the spray has dried.

·        If you have pets that chomp on leaves, do not grow any poisonous plants in your home or yard. Let’s work to keep our own, and our neighbor’s pets safe and healthy!

ABOUT THOSE SPIDER BITES

People are glad to know that most spiders are completely harmless.  In fact, only about 50 species of spiders are able to bite people, out of a total of about three thousand kinds of spiders in the United States.  The vast majority of spiders cant penetrate our human skin with their small fangs.  Nevertheless, spiders get blamed for an awful lot of bites, and often incorrectly.  In a recent study, a researcher showed that in 80 percent of cases where a spider bite was suspected, the bite was actually caused by another pest, or was the symptoms of a disease. The true culprit was usually a flea, tick, bed bug, kissing bug, mite, bee, wasp, or biting fly. Spiders leave a very characteristic set of two tiny puncture marks, set close together. Insects leave a single puncture mark. However, the marks are impossible to see once the bite is inflamed.

The black widow causes the most painful bite. The bite can be, but rarely is, fatal to small children and elderly people, but it is never fatal when treated promptly by a physician. Bites from recluse spiders, including the brown recluse, are generally not fatal, but they can cause an open, festering wound which can take months to heal unless treated. The hobo spider, also called the aggressive house spider, has spread to areas in the Pacific Northwest, and causes an open wound similar to recluse spiders. Yellow sac spiders are very common biters, but their bite, as well as tarantula bites, is usually very minor.

Pest Prevention Tip of the Month

Be sure to daily pick up fruits and nuts that fall from trees. These attract yellow jackets and wasps during the day; at night, rats and mice feed on them. Dispose of these items in a garbage can with a tight lid, never throw them on top of an open compost pile.

LYME DISEASE NEWS

Scientists are beginning to understand why some areas are such “hotbeds” for Lyme disease. In the central and eastern United States, wherever white-footed mice thrive, the number of disease carrying ticks skyrockets. Unfortunately, Urban Development is constantly creating more areas where white-footed mice flourish. Although many small animals carry the disease bacteria , white-footed mice are much more apt to be infected., and tics feeding on these mice will almost certainly become infected themselves. Tics are born without the bacteria, but once they become infected, they can then transfer it to humans or our pets. White-footed mice thrive in areas where forests have been fragmented by clearing for farm fields, homes, and other urban development. They are less common in forests, probably because forests have more mouse predators such as Owls and Bobcats that limit their numbers. The more we encroach on forests, the more we create areas where Lyme disease is a major problem
